Spring is in full swing and the weather is getting warmer by the day. It isn’t uncommon to be ready for the summer months when the kids can go outside and play giving you a little breathing room and some much needed quit time. It is important though to give children some guidance on what activities they should do outside because the last thing that you want is for them to be out playing in the middle of the road.
I have 3 children (Girl, Boy, Girl) and am going to give recommendations on what they have taught me. Because when it comes to parenting we are really just a guidance device and we try to tailor our activities to things that our kids enjoy, otherwise everyone ends up miserable and frustrated which we don’t want to happen here. So off we go!
Summer activity #1 is definitely splash pads. They seem to be popping up in all major cities. Splash pads can be found in malls and parks. The best thing is that most of them are free! Two of my children love running through the water streams and having the water hit their hands. My other child just likes to sit on the sidelines and observe everyone trying to determine who the water will shoot out and get next. If you haven’t taken your children to a splash pad you need to find one and try them out. They are a blast for kids of all ages.
Summer Activity #2 was a close one but cooking hotdogs and s’mores outside is a favorite for any kid. Kids love to help cook and they love showing us how independent that they are and this satisfies both of those prerequisites if you cook hotdogs over a small fire pit. We found a small portable fire pit at our local Walmart and purchased a small bundle of fire wood from a local grocery store and we were set. The kids love sitting in their camping chairs in the back yard roasting hot dogs and making s’mores. If you don’t have a backyard they can still be just as yummy when cooked in the oven and they don’t need much time once the oven is pre-heated. This is also a great time to teach your kids about fire safety.
Our last summer activity is simply enjoying your kids while you have them! Kids wont be small forever so we need to take advantage of the time that we have with them and spend memorable moments with them while they still want to be with us. So ask your kids what the #1 thing is that they want to do this summer and let them help in planning it and it will surely make for a memorable event for everyone involved.
